A Diaper Change

Baby's Health Studies
Disposable diapers do not need to disclose their contents to consumers and they contain numerous components that are relatively new in use. While the following studies are several years old, they are the most recent studies conducted on these issues. These studies and articles are worth looking at when making a decision about what to put on your baby's bottom.

Asthma May be Linked to Disposable Diaper Use
A study conducted in late 1999 by Anderson Laboratories showed that mice exposed to emissions from disposable diapers showed asthma like symptoms. The study also conducted a chemical analysis of the emisions from the disposable diapers and found several chemicals with known respritory toxicity. The study even says “Disposable diapers should be considered as one of the factors that might cause or exacerbate asthmatic conditions.”

Disposable Diapers May Contribute to Male Infertility

Male infertility and low sperm count have been on the rise in recent decades. One study shows that the increasing use of disposable diapers may be linked. The study conducted in May of 2000 showed that scrotal temperature was higher when infants were wearing disposable diapers than while the same infants were wearing cloth diapers. The theory is that increased testicular temperature in early childhood caused by the use of disposable diapers could cause male infertility. The male bodys’ natural cooling mechanism is restricted with the wearing of disposable diapers. Further study, which has yet to be conducted, is needed to research the impact of this temperature increase on future fertility.
