Caring for Wool
Please read all the listed items about caring for your wool. Wool is delicate and needs special treatment.
Essentially you just hand wash and lanolize every few weeks and lay flat to dry. That is said because there is a lot of information here and it looks more complicated and time consuming than it is. It is just a few actual steps that take only a few minutes a month.
Wash every few weeks by hand with a mild wool wash or olive oil bar soap
The water should be room temperature
Hot water can cause felting (shrinking) of the wool
Ice cold water should also be avoided
Do not scrub or rub the wool
Do not soak, except to lanolize
Lanolize after every washing or if the lanolin is used up in the cover
Use a wool cure like Imse Vimse, or pure lanolin like lansinoh (used for breastfeeding moms).
When using pure lanolin take a pea sized amount and place it in your plugged sink, then run a little hot water and rub it around to melt it. Then run room temperature or slightly cool water to fill your sink up the rest of the way. Test the water to make sure the end result is room temperature before adding your wool covers.
Using a wool cure like Imse Vimse is easier for first timers, and comes with directions on the bottle.
Lanolize by soaking for 15 min. in the room temperature lanolin bath.
You do not need to rinse after lanolizing the cover.
Gently press out the water with your hands
Do not wring out or twist
Lay the cover on a towel and roll the towel up with the cover inside and press the water out with your hands.
