The Right Fit for Your Budget
There is not one type of reuseable diaper that is the best for every situation, which is why there are a ton of popular options everywhere you turn. Having so many options is great if you know what you’re doing, but is daunting to most first timers. The reason for all the different diapering types is that each child is different so fit and absorbency needs vary, parents and caretakers have different routines and time to spend on diapering, and finally diapering budgets affect the best option. I hope this article can help you address the latter consideration so that cloth diapering can fit comfortably into your life.
Modest Budget: A tight budget need not restrict you from getting started with cloth diapering your baby. After all getting started will make your baby care expenses drop immediately. But many reusable diapers seem so expensive! There are cheaper alternatives for you and they work just as well.
You will need:
36 Prefold diapers
4-6 Covers / Wraps
36 cloth wipes (optional but also saves money)
1 wet bag (optional but good for toting soiled diapers home in your diaper bag)
Total investment ($111-$232)
Learn more about Prefolds.
Medium Budget: Your diapering budget leaves some wiggle room for some more convenience with cloth diapering. You still have to pace yourself on the start up costs, though. This is what I would recommend.
You will need:
24-36 One Size pocket diapers (slightly more than non adjustable types but can be used as your baby grows)
12 extra inserts (optional but good for extra protections during outings or nighttime)
36 cloth wipes (optional but also saves money)
1-2 wet bags (optional but good for toting soiled diapers home in your diaper bag)
Total Investment ($430-$785)
Large Budget: Money is no object and you want cloth diapering to be as easy as possible. This is my recommendation.
You will need:
36 All-in-One or Pocket Diapers (These are the least bulky and most easy to use, you can pick different colors and brands for your collection. There is no point buying more than will fit in your washing machine at one time.)
12 extra inserts (if choosing to use pocket diapers for times when you need more absorbency)
36-48 cloth wipes (optional)
1-2 wet bags
1-2 packages of flushable liners (optional)
Total Initial Investment ($570-$796)
You will save over disposable diapers with each option over the course of diapering, although with the less expensive systems your family can save even more. Often more important than budget considerations is your lifestyle. If you do not think you will be successful using a more time intensive method of cloth diapering, then buying the more expensive and convenient diapers will save you more because you will use them instead of switching to disposables in frustration. Another thing to remember is that you can mix and match your cloth diaper collection maybe using prefolds and covers for daytime, while using All-in-Ones or pockets for night time and outings. The options are endless and hopefully you will now see that as a good thing.
